You know you’ve had a good experience when it’s hard to say goodbye. This is exactly how I feel now that my internship with Biorock® Indonesia has come to an end!
For as long as I can remember, I have loved sharks. Following a dream to swim with them back in 2017, I travelled from Canada to Australia where I worked for four months until finally, I was able to spend 3 days scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. With sharks on my mind, I didn’t spend too much time considering what the reefs might look like. I assumed, and took for granted, that they would be vibrant and Finding Nemo-like. I was wrong.
The saddening state of the Reef became immediately apparent, dominated by widespread coral bleaching. I truly couldn’t believe my eyes; it consumed my attention. Since then, I have been incredibly inspired and motivated by coral reef restoration projects, initiatives, and related research.
My name is Summer, I recently graduated with a Biology degree from Queen’s University in Canada, and I had the privilege of interning remotely with Biorock® Indonesia this summer (2020). During my internship, I worked with Biorock’s Communications Lead, Lia, who was professional, motivated, and kind.
Being new to the Communications field, it was a fast learning curve! Throughout my internship, I learnt about and worked on projects that developed my skills in search engine optimization (SEO), content distribution, campaign development and so much more!
My experience was as educational as it was inspiring. I have been inspired by their leadership, not only in their local communities but in the scientific community, with their innovative approach to coral reef restoration. Plus, it’s pretty remarkable to be able to work on projects happening on the other side of the world! Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity.
To anyone considering getting involved in any way: Do it!
To Biorock Indonesia’s team: Thank You for all the important work you do – I’m so excited to see what you accomplish in the future!
