“…our innovative and scientifically sound approach to coral reef restoration across Indonesia has ignited international interest”
Speaking of, on February 24th, 2020, we had the pleasure of welcoming a special visitor to our Pemuteran site in Bali – the one and only, Alexandra Cousteau!
Who is Alexandra Cousteau?
Alexandra Cousteau is a French American environmental activist, explorer, and dedicated ocean advocate. Through storytelling, public speaking and explorations, she continues to successfully bring awareness to important marine protection issues.
Alexandra is no stranger to this game either; she is a third-generation advocatory for ocean conservation! She follows in the footsteps of her father, Philippe Cousteau, an award winning underwater filmmaker and oceanographer, and her grandfather, Jacques Cousteau, who raked up a seemingly endless list of titles in his time including scientist, marine conservationist, filmmaker and notably, “The Father of Scuba Diving”. To my scuba diving readers – we have Jacques Cousteau to thank for inventing the open-circuit scuba regulator, allowing humans to “breath” and explore the underwater world for longer than a single breath, and without struggling with the compounded difficulties of swimming with an air-filled tube stretching to the surface. – Yes, people used to do that!
Needless to say, ocean conservation runs deep in Alexandra’s veins!
“…ocean conservation runs deep in Alexandra’s veins!”
Alexandra is the co-founder and President of Oceans 2050, an organization that is focused on restoring abundance to the oceans in one human generation., furthering her family’s legacy in science, advocacy and exploration. Alexandra’s life-long dedication to ocean conservation has taken her all around the world… including to us, at Biorock® Indonesia!
Alexandra Cousteau’s Biorock Experience
Alexandra experienced Biorock® Indonesia to the fullest!
During her visit, Alexandra kindly took the time to meet our organization’s leaders, learned the ins and outs of Biorock® Indonesia as an NGO and our impacts, toured our facilities, and then as a part of the official Biorock Experience, she was taken on a guided scuba tour of our abundant Biorock reef. After the reef tour, Alexandra expressed that it was a “tremendously exciting moment for [her] to see the 20 years of hard work that has gone into restoring these reefs”. As an avid diver, she was exhilarated by the vast array of biodiversity and life that the Biorock reefs have already attracted and are now supporting.
“It was a ‘tremendously exciting moment for [her] to see the 20 years of hard work that has gone into restoring these reefs’”
Alexandra shared her insights with us, emphasizing the importance of educating locals and tourists about the incalculable importance of coral reefs and their protection. Coral reefs are “the ocean’s treasure box”, she described, and should be treated with the utmost respect.
They are, after all, the backbone to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet!
With coral reefs driving a huge sector of the global tourism industry, Alexandra pointed out that divers should “take memories” and “leave behind their bubbles”. Corals can be damaged easily so diving respectfully is a great way to help keep coral reefs healthy and protected.
Before her time with us was over, Alexandra applauded Biorock® Indonesia for our continuous effort in protecting coral reefs and urged others to come see, learn and experience it for themselves. Indonesia is, as Alexandra describes it, located in “the center of the center of marine biodiversity in the world”, making its underwater beauty unavoidable, and Biorock® Indonesia’s continued dedication to ensuring the survival of these vital ecosystems that much more important.
Alexandra, we commend your perseverance and we thank you for all the important work you continue to do for our oceans; we hope to see you again when it’s safe to do so!
